“I don’t do that anymore.”

I noticed something possibly heartbreaking interesting in the Civil War trailer.

Bucky appears to be unarmed through most of the trailer. Obviously he wasn’t going to walk around looking like the walking armory he was as The Winter Solder, but he doesn’t seem to have any weapons on him at all.

Until this scene comes along:

Bucky does not look happy at all. In fact that little blink followed by that jaw movement looks like he’s holding back some serious emotion. Steve appears to be comforting him. Or at least he’s reminding Bucky that he isn’t alone. I doubt its a coincidence that the gesture is so similar to the one we saw during Steve’s flashback in CA:TWS.

He and Steve both look resolved more than anything, but regretful as well. They’re doing what they have to do, but neither actually wants to do it. Most especially Bucky, by the looks of it. And that makes sense.

After the war, after what Hydra did to him and the things he was made to do, perhaps Bucky didn’t want to fight anymore. Maybe he was even afraid to.

What if he’s been hiding since the events of CA:TWS for just that reason? He knows they’ll never let him choose not to fight now. Not after every government agency knows what he can do. They’ll either want to use him as their own weapon or lab rat, trying to duplicate what Hydra was able to make him. He will never be free, no matter if he’s pardoned or proven innocent or given medals or whatever.

But now someone has found him. The bad guys want to use him for their own ends again. He has to fight for his life again. Steve is up against something big and Bucky needs to stand by his side again. He’s in the middle of a war he barely understands again.

He has to pick up the gun again.
